K12 Review by Niamh McAlister

When I heard that one of my favourite singers was going to be releasing a movie, I was so excited, and I am not ashamed to tell you that I watched it three times since it came out on youtube!

This fantastic film sees Melanie Martinez starring as Crybaby, a girl going to a boarding school. It was released on the 5th of September and was written and directed by Melanie Martinez. It was Produced by Tyler Zelinsky and Gergely Varga.

Although the music and the visuals were amazing, I felt that the movie dealt with some real issues too. In one of the songs, called Show and Tell she tells us that she feels like her fans aren't treating her like a real human. Another example of this is the song Orange juice, where the singer addresses her friend with Bulimia.

I love how Melanie sends a great message to our generation about not being afraid to be ourselves. Ever since her appearance on The Voice in season three, she has stood out in the crowd with her unique voice and her wonderful hairstyle! I remember watching that clip on youtube and being in awe of her. She sang her own version of Toxic by Britney Spears (which I highly recommend you watch) and turned three chairs before moving to the battle rounds.

In the film, You see Crybaby and her Friends try to take down the oppressive schooling system that is K-12. The movie shows multiple scenes where the school tries to control the students with pills and mind control, which I think represents the leaders of the world trying to control us. I don’t want to give too much away incase you want to watch it for yourself, which I highly recommend you do!

I’d give this film  as it ticks all the boxes for a musical film. It has brilliant songs, a great cast, amazing visual effects and a fantastically eerie plot. All 13 songs are both catchy and meaningful and it has a great message for young girls! I can’t tell you how brilliant it is! If I had to choose my favourite song, I think it would have to be The Principle (which I am listening to while I am writing this).
