2019- The Year of Music Gold by Annabel T Kassa

As the year ends and a new one begins, I look back on all the great tunes released this year. It has really been a penultimate year in terms of new music and different genres, with 2019 being the breakthrough year for many artists and providing them with so much success. As listeners as well, we have developed our taste in music and new artists seem to be surprising us. 2019 has also been the year that many previously famous artists have come back and teased new songs and even albums. For artists, this year has not only been musically successful but also their unique ideas have proved very efficient, with many artists racking up tons of money through merchandise and businesses like makeup lines and brand deals. The huge influence  of music on all our lives still remains, with eager fans ready to prance on new trends and next thing you know that small clip you heard is now a song (rise and shine, anyone?), bringing in millions of views.  

Ed Sheeran: Named artist of the decade, Ed has brought countless hits charting no.1 including his songs from his no. 6 collaboration album which linked many well-known artists and produced songs like Take Me Back to London feat Stormzy and South of the Border feat Camilla Cabello and Cardi B.

Billie Eilish: This now 18 year old sensation released many songs alongside her brother Finneas and her album ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We GO?’ proved extremely popular with her song ‘bad guy’ peaking at no.1 on the charts for 38 weeks. This has really been her year, with her sell-out world tour attracting many fans and undoubtedly popularity within many celebrities herself.

Stormzy: Although controversial, Stormzy is a much loved artist of the UK, with his no.1 Vossi Bop on the charts and his amazing performance at Glastonbury. He is known also for his collaborations and has also given back to the community with his Merky scholarship programme and his argued political opinions on the government. His album ‘Heavy is the Head’ is widely streamed and is arguably the most streamed album in the UK.

AJ Tracey: This artist has definitely risen to extreme fame in 2019. His popular song ‘Ladbroke Grove’ and his fantastic tour have attracted many fans. One could say 2019 was his breakout year. His other famous songs include ‘Kiss and Tell’ and ‘Butterflies’ racking up 32 million views. Watch out for his songs this year!

These are just a few artists that have become extremely popular this year but others include Mabel, NSG, Ava Max and Aitch. The genres of music have definitely changed and the British public has taken interest in different artists and songs. 2019 had definitely been a year of wild, wild tunes and I hope to look out for more breakthrough artists. 2020 is evidently a year of great promise in the music industry!
